United Women Strike Late to Beat Reading

Manchester United beat Reading Women 1-0, as substitute Rachel Williams scores a late winner.

United manager Marc Skinner named an unchanged starting 11 that beat Liverpool 5-0 last Sunday. The away side started the game better than Reading as a Kiera Ladd attempt on goal was stopped by Reading goalkeeper Jackie Burns inside the first 10 minutes.

Trying to get her eighth clean sheet in this seasons Women’s Super League, United goalkeeper Mary Earps was forced to make two saves from the newly confident Reading.

With two efforts from Emma Harries and Justine Vanhaevermaet. United were awarded a penalty five minutes before half time as Captain Katie Zelem’s penalty was saved by Burns in goal.

Nikita Parris was close to scoring twice but was denied as United went in at half time with a goalless draw.

The Red Devils halftime the second half with Alessia Russo being so close to put United ahead, with 10 minutes to go a Vanhaevermaet free kick was crucially saved by Earps to keep Marc Skinner’s side in the game.

Substitute Rachel Williams scored a brilliant solo goal scoring in the top corner as the number 28 and United were going back to Leigh Sports Village with all three points.

Manchester United Women are now joint top of the WSL with Chelsea on 28 points.
