United were heavily linked with signing Dutchman, Gakpo in the summer as the club were deliberating whether to sign him or Antony, and the club signed Anthony at the end of August.
The player has also spoken about the fact that United manager Erik ten Hag contacted him in the summer but a deal did not materialise [The Times].
However, the dream of Gakpo playing at the Theatre of Dreams is not dead in the water because this month it was reported that it would cost United just £43m to secure his services in January, which is what Romano confirmed when speaking to The United Stand today.

Gakpo will be in high demand because of his exploits at the World Cup because at the time of writing he has scored three goals in three games during the Netherlands World Cup campaign thus far. He has also performed well for PSV Eindhoven, where he has scored 9 goals and registered 12 assists from just 14 Eredivisie appearances this season [Transfermarkt.com].

Gakpo was asked about interest from Premier League clubs during his media conference whilst away with the Netherlands at the World Cup, and this is what he had to say, “I’m 100% focused on the World Cup now. It’s always nice to hear but I just focus here and do my best.”
