United Comeback in the Derby to Win

|

Manchester United comeback from one goal down as they beat local rivals Manchester City in the derby.

This was the first time the Manchester Derby was on BT Sport hence the change in time to the earlier kickoff time of 12:30.

United manager Erik Ten Hag made nine changes to the starting 11 that beat Charlton in midweek.

Manchester United played cat and mouse with City in the first half with United often chasing the ball and trying to press in the right areas.

Marcus Rashford went close twice but Ederson denied him from scoring. The closest Pep Guardiola’s men got was a blocked Haaland shot by Casemiro and Fred.

Kyle Walker had an attempt from outside the box which seemed to be City’s first shot near David De Gea’s goal.

City started as the better team in the second half, dominating play which resulted in them getting the first goal of the derby.

In the 59th minute, Kevin de Bruyne’s cross-founded substitute Jack Grealish headed home as United fans looked in despair as they thought worse could come.

However, the Red Devils survived the blue wave attacks and scored in the 78th minute when captain Bruno Fernandes curled his shot past Ederson to level the scoring.

It was quickly ruled out for offside but VAR ruled the goal onside as jubilation arose across Old Trafford.

Two minutes later United make a vintage counterattack as 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho crossed the ball to the open Rashford who slotted the ball through Ederson’s legs to put the red team in Manchester ahead.

Manchester United held out and won their first Manchester derby since the 2019/20 season.
