Fabrizio Romano: United ‘interested’ in former Celtic star

|

According to reliable football journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have shown strong interest in signing right-back Jeremie Frimpong after sending scouts to observe him on numerous occasions.

United are keen to add more competition to Diogo Dalot as it looks like Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s time at Man United is coming to its end, with Dean Jones reporting that he could be on his way out in January.

What is the news surrounding Frimpong?

At the end of October, FootballTransfers stated that United are interested in signing the former Celtic man and could be tempted to sign him in January.

The news comes after Wan-Bissaka continues to be heavily linked with a return back to Crystal Palace.

What has Romano said about Frimpong and United?

Romano has said that Frimpong is on United’s right-back watchlist, however, a deal could be difficult to strike in the winter.

Talking to Give Me Sport, the transfer guru said, “They need probably a new right-back. As an opportunity on the market, Jeremie Frimpong is one of the players they are following.

“They have sent their scouts multiple times to follow him, but Bayer Leverkusen will try to keep the player until the end of the season, so it’s not going to be an easy one.”

Would Frimpong be a good signing for United?

After the win over West Ham at the end of last month, United manager Erik ten Hag said that whilst acknowledging the excellent development that Dalot has made this season, he and United need another right-back option if Wan-Bissaka does go.

“The development [of Dalot] is really good, but I have to mention that a club like Manchester United needs two good full-backs, because we have a lot of games to cover.”

From the FBref statistics, the Dutchman is ranked in the 98th (percentile for dribbles and he also has a high percentile for touches (98) in the opposition penalty area, which shows that he likes to get forward and support team-mates in dangerous attacking positions.

If the Leverkusen man was to come to United and maintain his current level of performances, then he would be a brilliant addition to Man United.
