Compared to the dark days of the last few weeks of the Jose Mourinho reign as the manager of Manchester United, we really are enjoying wonderful times at the moment.
Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, as we may have mentioned previously, has swept into the club he played for and rejuvenated a squad that looked disinterested under Mourinho.
It is hard to pin point one reason why that is, but I’m among those willing to argue that getting Paul Pogba back to playing the way we knew he was capable of is a significant reason why there has been such a drastic change.
Against Tottenham Hotspur, at Wembley, Pogba was his imperious best, providing the exquisite pass for the winning goal whilst also producing a powerhouse performance in midfield.
Following the fine win, when asked about the turnaround in fortune, Pogba, as reported by the BBC, is quoted as having remarked:
“I am enjoying playing my football now. I like to be more attacking, I had to defend too much before and that is not my best attribute. This is my position.”
Did Mourinho’s penchant for putting the defensive shackles on his side impair Pogba’s natural flair?
It’s also noticeable that since Solksjaer took charge, Pogba’s attacking drive has seen him become directly involved in 53% of Manchester United’s 15 Premier League goals, scoring 4 and providing 4 assists, a fact that Pogba illuminated upon when he further remarked, to the same source,
“The manager tells me to get into the box and score goals. The best example is Frank Lampard.”
Lampard was always a fine player and one, I have to say, I preferred to Steven Gerrard but perhaps the anti-Liverpool bias creeping in!
If Pogba can, over the period of his career, emulate Lampard’s goal return, then he’ll have had some career at Old Trafford.
