Former Reds making the headlines abroad

Manchester United have let some players go to Serie A over the past couple of years but how are they doing now?

Paul Pogba (29)

The Frenchman’s free transfer from United back to Juventus raised a couple of eyebrows due to both the fee and the controversy around Pogba’s second period at the club.

He moved on July 11th to the old lady and was bought by his former Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri to come back and be part of a team that hasn’t won the Scudetto in two years, but with financial troubles at Juventus, it is vital that they bring in good and marquee signings to try and cover over the cracks of the troubles, to have a better team which stands a chance against the two Milan teams and Napoli.

Pogba has played only one game against Mexican side C.D. Guadalajara due to his knee injury and having surgery that will keep him out of the World Cup.

As well as his injury Paul Pogba has also been involved in a court case with his brother Mathias over allegations that he was part of a group which attempted to extort €13 million (£11.2m).

Chris Smalling(32)

The six-foot-four English international left United on October 5th 2020 after having a loan spell with Roma in the 19/20 season where e impressed and got his move to northern Italy for £13.5 million.

Won the UEFA Conference League with Roma last season and over his time at Roma, he has got the name ‘Smalldini’ due to his great performances.

He has played 113 times for Roma scoring nine goals and has been a rock at the back for the Gillorossi alongside Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini.

Smalling concedes an average of 1.05 goals for every 90 minutes that the player is on the pitch. Their Clean Sheets ratio is currently at 43%. That means Chris Smalling has kept a Clean Sheet in 3 matches out of the 7 that the player has played in.

Being aged 32, Smalling is still one of the best English centre-halves in Europe however he still won’t be picked for the England national team this is because Southgate is looking for a vibrant and youthful side which Chris doesn’t fit the criteria but how can it be justified that Maguire gets chosen when he has only played seven matches compared to Smalling who has played every Serie A game this season and been good.

Romelu Lukaku(29)

Since he left Manchester United five years ago he has won the club world cup with Chelsea and a Scudetto with Inter.

Played 98 times for Inter Milan and is now in his second spell at the club on loan from Chelsea for this season after his big-money move was a failure so he returned to the Nerazzurri because Tuchel didn’t need him and also a sense of recollecting his form back to get back to his best.

Playing 851 minutes in the Champions League for Conte and Inzaghi’s sides he scored all together six goals in 10 games.

Another reason for him to get back to his best is that with the World Cup around the corner Belgium will look to Lukaku to lead the line in what looks like the last attempt to win anything for this Belgium golden generation.

Nemanja Matic(34)

Leaving United in this past summer transfer window he has been consistent under his former United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho who looks like he gets the best out of him.

Matic has played every game for Roma in Serie A and the Europa League in his first season playing 16 times overall so far this season. He has also retired from the Serbian national team.

Matic formerly played alongside Pogba and Mctominay at United and since he has gone to the capital he has started the majority of games with Italian midfielder Bryan Cristante.

It also looks like the Serbian is in his favoured formation over his career with a back three behind him and a solid midfield partner like he did under Mourinho and Conte at Chelsea with Kante, he is finding that with Cristante at Roma as well.
