World Cup

United players in action today

Day 13 could see as many as seven Manchester United representatives competing for their respective nations at the World Cup in Qatar.

It is a critical day in the World Cup for Facundo Pellistri and his Uruguay team-mates as they take on Ghana in a must-win Group H clash. The game is scheduled to take place at 3pm UK time at the Al Janoub Stadium.

This game has been given extra significance because not only is it a must-win territory for both teams but it is also the re-run of the 2010 quarter-final when Ghana missed a late penalty in the final minute of extra time after Luis Suarez of Uruguay stopped the ball with his hands like a goalkeeper would do. Had Asamoah Gyan scored the penalty it would have sent Ghana through and in the process becoming the first African team to qualify for the semi-finals.

At the same time, Portugal will play against South Korea, who need to win this game and hope Ghana either draw or lose their match against Uruguay. Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot are already through after Portugal won their opening games of the tournament and it was a Fernandes double that sealed qualification for Portugal in their 2-0 win over Uruguay.

After the conclusion of matters in Group H, attention will now switch to Group G, which is Brazil’s group. Brazil have already qualified from their group, thanks to a match-winning goal by United’s Casemiro in their 1-0 win over Switzerland to go with their 2-0 win over Serbia.

Brazil will play against Cameroon at 7pm UK time at the Lusail Stadium, and Cameroon, who put in a good showing against Serbia in a 3-3 draw, will need results to go their way if they are to advance to the Round of 16 because they need to beat Brazil and hope Switzerland do not win.

Fred, Anthony, Casemiro and Alex Telles, will all be hoping to feature in Brazil’s final game, however, it will be understandable if Casemiro is given a rest for the game against Cameroon because Brazil are safely through to the next round.

The other game in Group G is between Switzerland and Serbia, with Switzerland knowing that victory would ensure their passage to the next round is complete. Serbia will only progress if they win against Switzerland but goal difference comes into the equation if Cameroon beats Brazil.
