After a recent run of form which may have hinted Manchester United were set to climb the Premier League table and turn around what was looking like a disappointing season, those aspirations were bought crashing down to earth with a defeat at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth.
The defeat leaves Manchester United in 10th place in the Premier League table with 13 points from the 11 games played. But, more worryingly, already Manchester United are a staggering 18 points behind the current leaders, Liverpool, suggesting that instead of closing the gap in class that existed last season, it is in fact widening.
Speaking to the media afterwards, and as quoted by The BBC, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer had this to say:
“You are always very down when you lose and considering the form we were in we were hoping to take the three points.
“We could not capitalise on the good start and a moment of magic won the game for them, sometimes you just hold up your hands and say ‘well done’.”
Noble sentiments but not ones that suggest that United’s recent resurgence was going to continue.
Indeed, the game threw up two alarming statistics.
Firstly, the omens are not good when the team falls a goal behind when Solksjaer is in charge, with Manchester United having lost all 6 games in which that has occurred.
Secondly, Manchester United have not managed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 11 Premier League games.
Remind me how much cash we spent on strengthening our defence last summer?
These are worrying times for all Manchester United supporters.
