United learn fifth-round FA Cup opponents

|

Manchester United have been drawn at home (again!) to West Ham United in the fifth-round of the Emirates FA Cup.

United beat Reading 3-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday evening, thanks to a double from Casemiro and a goal from Fred in front of the Stretford End. Whilst, a goal apiece from Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio confirmed West Ham’s passage into the fifth-round of the Emirates FA Cup with a 2-0 win over Derby County last night.

The game will take place in midweek in the week commencing 27th of February and from the fifth-round onwards, there will be no replays in the competition anymore in order to reduce the fixture congestion, which means that should the game end in a draw after 90 minutes, then extra-time will be required, and if necessary, then penalties will be needed to determine who goes through to the quarter-final stage.

The next meeting in the FA Cup will be the third time in three seasons that United and the Hammers have met in cup competitions, as both sides played against each other in the Carabao Cup during the third round last season, with the London Stadium outfit winning 1-0 and the season before that United and West Ham met in last-16 stage of the FA Cup, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side winning 1-0 at Old Trafford, thanks to a Scott McTominay strike in extra-time.

Erik ten Hag’s team have met the Londoners in the Premier League this season, with the Reds coming out victorious on home soil as a fine header from Marcus Rashford in what was his 100th goal for the club handed United a 1-0 win at the Theatre of Dreams at the back end of October.

The home draw against West Ham, now means that the Manchester United fans have not seen their side play away from home inย  the FA Cup for three years, with the last away match taking place at Derby County’s Pride Park just before Covid, where United won 3-0 in March 2020.
