The Rise of Alejandro Garnacho

|

Alejandro Garnacho has made a brilliant start to his first senior United season scoring two goals and assisting twice as it seems like a star might be coming to the red side of Manchester once again.

Garnacho started his career at Getafe before making the move to Atletico Madrid’s youth academy aged 11 where he impressed however what proved to be his last season at Atleti’s academy he felt like he deserved more game time.

Manchester United and their scouting team were monitoring the youngster from Madrid whilst he was over in Spain and thought he would suit United with him having aspects of the ‘United Way’ of playing football.

Running at defenders taking them on one on one have no fear and be a team player who scores goals and provides chances for teammates who look to get into the box.

So in the 2020/21 season he was bought by the Red Devils for around 500 thousand euros, he started very well scoring 7 goals in 17 games in the Under 18’s Premier League.[transfermarkt]

He followed that up the following season scoring 7 goals in 6 games in the FA Youth Cup which United won at Old Trafford in what was their first Fa Youth Cup since 2011 where Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba were the stars to have risen from that team.

The 21/22 season was also big for him as he was called up to the 44 man Argentina national team, with him being eligible to play for them because it is his mothers native country. He then went onto play for the Argentina under 20’s two months later, scoring 4 goals in the Maurice Revello Tournament.

Impressing and making a lot of noise at youth level it was inevitable that the Argentine was going to be called up to the first team and he was in the summer for United’s preseason tour as he tried to show newly appointed manager Erik Ten Hag what he could add to the current team.

Ten Hag did not bring him into the fold straight away as he was at Ajax always cautious with youth talent to bring them in at the right time and Garnacho’s time came against Real Sociedad on the 3rd of November.

Where he scored and was assisted by his idol Cristiano Ronaldo in what to went on to be United’s only goal in the game as they finished second in their group.

There was a minor blip for him and the Red Devils as Bruno Fernandes and Ten Hag both questioned him for being to arrogant but like a young Ronaldo who was arrogant look what happened to his career you could say.

It did not help that United lost against Villa 3-1 however Ten Hag’s side did not let that faze them as they beat Villa at Old Trafford in the Carabao cup with Garnacho getting two assits as the reds kept marching on.

A big game was on the weekend against Fulham which was the last game before the World Cup, United drew first blood through Eriksen but the cottagers replied through former United player Daniel James.

It seemed like one player needed to take the game by the scruff of the neck and this was Alejandro Garnacho’s time to shine as he scored a last mkinute which sent the United fans into a frenzy as they went back to Manchester with all three points and and Argentinian star on their hands.

If he keeps performing like he is doing with no fear, taking on world class teams and defenders and keeps scoring there is nothing stopping him from being a top player.
