Portugal smash Switzerland 6-1 as United players Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot started.

Portugal made seven changes to the team that lost 2-1 to South Korea, Cristiano Ronaldo was not included in the starting 11 for the first time since the 2006 euros in a major tournament.

Current United player Diogo Dalot starts for the second game in a row with fellow United teammate Bruno Fernandes also starting.

The stage was set for a great game at the Lusail Stadium with it being the last round of 16 games of the tournament.

Switzerland started off the better side in the first 10 minutes being more aggressive and looking to play forwards. In the 16th minute in his first international start, Goncalo Ramos fired a goal that went near the post of Sommer.

Ramos was two years old when Ronaldo made his professional debut. There could have been an argument that Fabian Schar could have gotten closer to the Benfica striker.

Shaqiri had a free kick that went estray of Diogo Costa’s goal, as he got a hand to it with it being Switzerland’s best chance of the game so far.

12 minutes until halftime Bruno Fernandes delivers a great ball to 39-year-old Pepe who heads the ball thunderously into the Swiss net, with it being his first international goal in 4 years.

Switzerland right back Fernandes swings a cross which was a powerful ball that Costa saved but Vargas could not finish the rebound with a header.

Fernando Santos’ Portugal added a second before halftime through, Bruno Fernandes was patient as he slots the ball through to Ramos who forces a routine stop from Sommer.

Goncalo Ramos adds a third and his second of the game in the 51right-back with United right back Dalot getting the assist for the goal.

RaphaΓ«l Guerreiro made it 4-0 as Portugal were embarrassing Switzerland.

Two minutes later Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji scored a tap in at the far post from a corner as Switzerland could at least go out of the competition knowing they tried against this Portuguese powerhouse.

Portugal fans chant Ronaldo halfway through which the second half as it gives off a similar feel to Argentina fans chanting Diego for Diego Maradona when he played for the Albiceletes.

Ramos also became the first player to score a hat trick at the Qatar World Cup as he chipped it over Sommer with the Swiss defending seeming non-existent.

Ronaldo came onto the pitch and scored an offside goal which was finished well by the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Substitute Rafael Leao added a sixth as Sommer misjudged the flight of the ball in the added minutes at the end of the second half.

Portugal will now face Morocco on Saturday at 3 o’clock in the quarter-finals.
