Crashing out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage, wasn`t written in the script for this season, especially after so much money has been spent on the squad since Jose Mourinho took over.

Jose`s team selection last night was a little puzzling, his record signing (Pogba) on the bench and somebody who can be inventive (Mata) alongside him.

From the off, Manchester United looked to be struggling, lacking cohesion and apparently ambition.

Jose only changed it once it was too late with Manchester United having a mountain to climb.

At the sound of the final whistle Jose sped off and headed for the tunnel, but at his post-match interview, he didn`t seem too fazed that the club had crashed out of the competition remarking,

‘I don’t think the performance was bad.

‘I don’t have regrets. I did my best, the players did their best. We tried, we lost and that is football.’

But there`s losing and there`s losing, the manner in which Manchester United meekly surrendered their place in the Champions League simply wasn`t acceptable.
