Manchester United did their chances of finishing second in the Premier League a world of good after beating Liverpool at Old Trafford.
Jurgen Klopp, in his pre-match press conference, had vowed his side would not park the bus in this fixture and that they would be going for the three points available.
However, Liverpool couldn`t cope with Manchester United`s powerful start whereby the home side raced into a 2-0 lead inside just twenty-four minutes, with two goals from Marcus Rashford who was making his first-start since December.
The first goal, in the 14th minute came after a long clearance out of the Manchester United defence, the ball was headed on by Romelu Lukaku to Rashford. The young striker cut inside his marker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and produced a powerful shot that gave Karius, in the Liverpool goal, no chance at all.
The second goal, in the twenty-fourth minute, saw Rashford capitalise on Juan Mata not being able to reach a ball in from Lukaku to score with another shot from virtually the same spot in the penalty area.
United, dominating proceedings, could have added a third goal before half-time but Juan Mata`s acrobatic overhead effort went just wide of the post.
Liverpool put on a better display after the break and pulled a goal back, in the sixty-sixth minute when Eric Bailly only succeeded in turning the ball into his own net as he tried to clear a cross from Sadio Mane.
Liverpool desperately pushed for an equaliser but the Manchester United defence held firm despite the referee playing six minutes of stoppage time.
