Jimmy Murphy Statue to be Unveild

|

Manchester United will unveil a statue of legend Jimmy Murphy outside the Stretford End on the 3rd of May 2023.

The club will honour the legend who was a big part of the Busby Babes and rebuilding Manchester United after the Munich Air Disaster on the 6th of February 1958.

He also coached his country Wales in their first World Cup in 1958 and then took over from Matt Busby when he was in the hospital, as he continued to rebuild United.

His main focus with Sir Matt was how to include and develop young players, with the two of them creating and nurturing United legends such as George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Duncan Edwards.

Pat Burns who is chairman of the Manchester Munich Memorial and a representative of the club and the Murphy family said “I was moved when saw the statue and there is no doubt that Alan has done a fantastic job in capturing the passion and image of one of the backroom legends at Old Trafford. I know the Murphy family, who joined us on the trip to Scotland, were also hugely impressed with the progress.”[Man Utd]

The statue is being designed by sculptor Alan Herriot in Edinburgh, who designed statues such as King Robert The Bruce and The Ancient Mariner but most notably the Denis Law statue in Aberdeen.

The day will also commemorate 65 years to the day when he led the Red Devils out to the FA Cup final at Wembley, where United beat Leicester City 3-1.
