Defender hoping for an early birthday gift

Lisandro Martinez celebrates his 25th birthday on the 18th of January and the Manchester United defender is hoping for an early birthday present as United get set to face Manchester City on Saturday.Ā

The returning World Cup winner, who made his first start for United since the World Cup against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup, is hoping that he and his Manchester United team-mates can deliver him an early gift by beating local rivals, Manchester City on Saturday in the Premier League.

”Yes, of course. It would be lovely to be able to enjoy it [my birthday],” Martinez admitted in an interview with ICS, as he looked ahead to Saturday’s 189th Manchester derby and any personal satisfaction at his latest landmark that may follow on Wednesday, although United now have a fixture that day, against Crystal Palace.

”But it’s a derby and you always have to try to win these games” [via Man Utd].

Since the World Cup, United have really turned it on since the return to competitive action as they have won all of their last six matches in all competitions, including three in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag’s side will be hoping to continue their rich vein of form when they prepare to do battle with City in the 189th Manchester Derby as victory over City will mean that United will only be one point behind their rivals, however, United will be aware of just how tough a task it is playing against arguably the best team in the league.

United will be hoping to get revenge on their 6-3 defeat to Pep Guardiola’s side by winning at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime (12.30pm UK time), and the game will be shown on BT Sports for those in the UK.
