Slotting in at full back on Sunday, in our season opener against West Bromwich Albion, Chris Smalling did a more than accomplished job.

But with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both picking up injuries in the hard-fought victory, there`s a distinct possibility that Smalling will be playing at his more favoured centre-back position in the coming weeks.

On the back of the victory against West Bromwich Albion, Smalling spoke to the media about Sir Alex`s Ferguson`s philosophy of giving youth a chance, remarking,

“It`s unfortunate to see your players go down injured, but the manager has shown all pre-season he`s willing to give the young boys a go and he`s thrown them into big games.”

“Everyone`s gelling and with people like Jonny and Fabio coming in, it`s great to see them stepping up.”

“We all know the score – if you do well, the manager will keep you in the team and it`s a big marker to all the other players and the rest of the squad that, if you perform well, it doesn`t matter how old you are.”

And as for stepping into the breach at full-back, a role he filled so well on Sunday, Smalling added,

“I`d rather play centre-back as it`s my main position but the manager feels I can help out at full-back.”

Personally, I thought Chris cut a rather imposing figure out on the flank and using his height and strength provided us with additional defensive cover and foraging attacking options!

But, if Ferdinand and Vidic are both ruled out for the coming weeks, it`ll be interesting to see who Sir Alex selects in the centre out of the trio of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans.

What would be your preference?
