When Louis van Gaal took over the managerial role at Old Trafford, speculation was rife as to which of the playing staff might be surplus to requirements.

It is probably safe to say that the Dutchman had dossiers on who he believed was up to the task of returning Manchester United to their position as the best club in the land and who he felt would fall by the wayside.

It`s fair to say that I, at the time, thought Ashley Young would fall into the latter category.

However, I`m delighted to admit that I was 100 per cent wrong and that during the course of the 2014 / 2015 season Young showed, on a consistent basis, he was worthy of a place in the starting eleven.

To me it appears that Louis van Gaal had worked out how to get the best out of the player who, previously, had been hit-and-miss.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Young is now set to put pen-to-paper, so we`re told, on a new three year contract.

Here at Vital Manchester United we`d like to offer our congratulations to Ashley and apologise for getting so wrong in our thoughts ahead of the start of last season.
