It became public knowledge yesterday that our new chief executive Ed Woodward had returned from Australia to conclude some transfer business.

Of course, speculation immediately became rife as to what possible deals could be about to go down.

United, aware of the ongoing commotion surrounding Chelsea`s confirmed bid for Wayne Rooney, were quick to infer Woodward had not returned to discuss a move to West London for the striker.

This morning, one significant member of the tabloid press pack, runs with a story that Manchester United are set to make a very significant bid for Gareth Bale, although his availability is questionable.

Perhaps the most logical reason for Woodward`s return surrounds the bid, earlier this week, for Cesc Fabregas. Having had a bid, said to be £26 million rejected by Barcelona, the consensus of opinion is that an improved bid could very well tempt the Catalan giants to sell, hence the necessary involvement from Ed Woodward.

Although I could be wide of the mark!
