A four goal romp, with three of the goals coming in the second half, was enough to see United go four points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Sir Alex tweaked his starting eleven slightly for this fixture with Scholes coming into the midfield quartet and Hernandez partnering Rooney with our leading scorer, Berbatov dropping to the bench.
Team – Van der Sar, O`Shea, Vidic, Smalling, Evra, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Rooney, Hernandez
Subs – Kuszczak, Brown, Fabio, Rafael, Gibson, Berbatov, King
United started sloppily, giving the ball away too easily and Wigan could easily have taken the lead early on but Van der Sar pulled off a good save to deny Victor Moses.
Hernandez could easily have given United the lead with a one-on-one situation but was thwarted before some good defensive work from Vidic denied Rodallega after some more good work from Moses.
But it was to be United that were to take the lead when Hernandez netted turning in a lovely cross from Nani.
Wigan 0 United 1 (Hernandez – 17 minutes)
Wigan almost responded immediately when Rodallega set up Watson but once again Van der Sar came to the rescue.
In a move started by Scholes, Rooney set up Nani but his shot hit the woodwork as United pressed to double their lead.
Half Time – Wigan 0 United 1
Wigan started the second half well and once again it was left to Van der Sar to keep United ahead pulling off a spectacular save from a long range effort from Figueroa.
Nani had a couple of chances to double our lead but couldn`t take them before Wigan wasted a glorious chance to go level, after a Vidic mistake, but Moses shot over from twelve yards out.
Pushing forward a spectacular effort from Nani soared over the crossbar. With Wigan throwing players forward, in search of an equaliser, the game started to open up.
Rooney had two chances, both headers but the first went wide and the second straight into the keepers` arms.
But United were to double their lead, shortly after, when a long ball wasn`t dealt with by the Wigan central defenders allowing Rooney and Hernandez to exchange passes before Hernandez netted to get his second goal of the game.
Wigan 0 United 2 (Hernandez – 74 minutes)
United then took advantage of some woeful Wigan defensive work when Rooney netted a third goal. Gibson, on as a substitute for Scholes, set the move in motion but it was down to the unselfishness of Berbatov who set Rooney up for the England striker to tap home.
Wigan 0 United 3 (Rooney – 84 minutes)
Still there was time for United to further improve their goal difference when Fabio, on as a substitute, scored to wrap things up for United. Netting his first goal for the club from a Fletcher cross.
Wigan 0 United 4 (Fabio – 87 minutes)
The game was now United`s and with Arsenal not playing, due to a Carling Cup Final appearance, the lead at the top of the Premier League was stretched to four points.
