“Back-up” was always likely to be Anders Lindegaard’s role when the goalkeeper came to Old Trafford, and for most of his 18-months so far it’s proven that way.

The Dane has done enough to earn a new four-year contract though, one that he is “very pleased to have signed”, but what will his role be for Man United during this time?

When he came in for David de Gea midway through last season he was solid enough but injury at the turn of this year denied the 28-year-old the chance to push on.

You would expect de Gea to begin the season in possession of the no.1 shirt but do you think Lindegaard will spend most the season “picking his nose” (something he famously said he wasn’t joining United to do when he signed), picking the splinters from his backside, picking the ball out of the net or keeping the ball from it?
