Manchester United, when the pressure was on, produced the win they needed to keep the pressure up on Manchester City at the top of the table.

But what, at one stage, looked like being a comfortable win, ended up being a tense finish courtesy of a Watford side who gave as good as they got.

Manchester United weathered an early spell of pressure from Watford, with Richarlison looking particularly impressive for the Hornets.

However, any fears that Watford could produce a shock were eased when Ashley Young scored a brace of goals.

The former Watford player scored with a good finish from the edge of the box before then scoring with a sublime free-kick.

With Watford looking to get back into the game, Manchester United made it 3-0 when Anthony Martial scored with a precise shot from the edge of the box.

But Watford, urged forward by their manager Marcos Silva, refused to give up and almost netted when he header hit the cross-bar.

But Manchester United`s resilience was to be broken with Watford scoring two quick goals, the first of which came when Troy Deeney scored from the spot and then Abdoulaye Dacore made the game interesting finishing, with just six minutes to go, from close range.

However, any fears of a frantic finish and Watford snatching an unlikely draw were eased when Jesse Lingard picked the ball up from inside his own half, drove forward and unleashed a decent shot to wrap up the three-points for Manchester United.

The next stop for Manchester United in this Premier League campaign is Arsenal (a) before Manchester City come to Old Trafford a week later.
