Sir Bobby Charlton believes that Real Madrid pay over the odds for Cristiano Ronaldo: as we all know, Los Merengues lodged an 80 million bid which United accepted. The deal hasn’t gone through yet but there’s little doubt that it will be finalised before the end of June.

‘It’s a lot of money, it’s crazy really.

‘If you want to be in the race, you have to pay the price. It seems sometimes a little bit vulgar.

‘But, nevertheless, that is business, I’m afraid. We have responsibilities to our company and to all the fans that support Manchester United, and it was decided that Ronaldo could go.’

And albeit there could be a lot of debate whether it was the good decision from the football point of view – United scored only 68 league goals last season so selling our most prolific goalscorer seems hardly the best idea – you cannot argue that it made perfect business sense.

Sir Bobby knows that as well even though he did not elaborate on that side of the things. He backed Sir Alex to make the right signings to keep United among the very best.
