Come the opening of the January transfer window, Manchester United may have a decision to make.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Aston Villa, managed by the former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce, are keen to sign Sam Johnstone on a permanent deal.

Twenty-four-year-old Johnstone is in his second spell at Villa Park, having spent five months on loan there last season.

Already, in what was a difficult start for the Championship club Johnstone has kept five clean-sheets.

The goalkeepers contract with Manchester United expires in June 2018 and he is well aware that he is well down the pecking order at Old Trafford, with David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira ahead of him.

That fact could be reason alone why Jose Mourinho might grant Steve Bruce his wish and allow Johnstone to move to Aston Villa on a permanent basis
