Edwin van der Sar: Confident at crosses but otherwise nothing to do on his return. 6

Wes Brown: Little attacking contribution but kept Agbonlahor quiet. 6

Rio Ferdinand: Did his job without fuss. 6

Nemanja Vidic: Untroubled, had a relatively easy game. 6

Patrice Evra: Ashley Young was nowhere to be seen and Evra was dangerous going forward. 7

Michael Carrick: Defensively he did well but his passing, distribution, intelligence was frustratingly poor. Gave away the ball cheaply on too many occasions. 5

Anderson: Solid but unspectacular for long periods. Came to life after Rooney’s introduction and played an important part in the first goal. 7

Cristiano Ronaldo: Poor. Failed to get the better of his markers and went down too often looking for free-kicks. Good work with the goal though. 6

Ryan Giggs: He played well enough, claimed an assist and displayed intelligence, particularly in the second half. 7

Ji-sung Park: He was better against Birmingham but he’s got his nine-month absence as a really good excuse. Good passing but in and out of the game. 6

Louis Saha: Played too deep in the first half, his touch was too often too heavy in the second. Needs Rooney to be really good. 5

Wayne Rooney: Had little more than 15 minutes but outstanding impact. His introduction gave shape to United, he started dictating the rhythm and played a vital part in the win. 8

Owen Hargreaves: The midfielder shielded the back four well enough but little time to have a real impact.

John O’Shea: No impact.
