OK, the most incomprehensible transfer rumour just won’t go away. It is about Manchester United signing David Villa in the summer. Frankly, I don’t get it.

David Villa will turn 29 this year. He would cost about 35M with hefty wages, too. He would want to be a fixture in the first team which is difficult, considering that our most successful formation seems to be 4-3-3 and Rooney is unlikely to be shifted from the centre-forward position.

Villa can attack from wide positions as well but that alone should not make this rumour credible. He’s expensive and at that price he’s old as well. Definitely not a Fergie signing.

Of course he’s not the only one we’re being linked with. Joe Cole is still on the radar as he cannot come to an agreement with Chelsea – eventually he will, I’m sure. Then there is David Silva for whom I would be prepared to kill but somehow I don’t think he’ll go anywhere else but Real or Barcelona.

The Di MarĂa rumours have gone a bit quiet recently but there is speculation about Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer (he would be a brilliant signing) or Lyon goalie Hugo Lloris, another fine prospect. And we are also tipped to make a cheeky bid for Chelsea target Rafael van der Vaart who’s only a squad player at Madrid but his suitors could look at Wesley Sneijder’s success at Inter Milan for inspiration: Sneijder was another creative Dutch midfielder deemed redundant at Madrid and he flourished elsewhere.

Simon Kjaer, of Palermo, is also on United’s radar and possibly plenty of others as well. I don’t expect a busy summer – although we’re in need of strengthening – but let the papers amuse themselves with rumours.
