So, we won’t have one of our most important players available for the important trip to San Siro in three weeks’ time after Vidic was banned for a red card he picked up in a competition which Inter never participated in. Next time our Carling Cup yellows will be transferred to the Champions League…

Fortunately, the Serbian defender got only a one-match ban for his somewhat harsh red in the World Club Championship final (which the European champions still won 1-0 with a brilliant Rooney goal) so, barring injury, he’ll be available for the second leg at Old Trafford.

However, it is a serious blow to United’s attempts to claim another record this season: if they avoid defeat at the San Siro, the champions will have gone 21 consecutive games in the Champions League without losing which is unprecedented. Let’s hope Rio, Evans and Brown will be fit and up for the job!
