I argued after the game against Aalborg that Wayne Rooney wouldn’t deserve to be punished for his ‘stamp’ on Risgard as, for me, there was no intent at all.

The big guys in the UEFA Disciplinary Committee evidently shared my view of the incident as they cleared Rooney.

‘Uefa will not open any disciplinary proceedings against Wayne Rooney,’ a statement read.

This, I think, is a victory of common sense as Rooney clearly stumbled and though Risgard was unfortunate that does not mean that any intent was involved. Wayne therefore will be able to play in the knockout stages, barring injury.
