Jose Mourinho’s search for another central defender, which United need to secure before the end of the month as you can’t see we’ll be able to continue forward with what we’ve got until January without being troubled, is ongoing.

Various players have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, at home and abroad.

Obviously Southampton’s Jose Fonte is being linked whereas Raphael Varane could have come to United in 2011 but ended up at Real Madrid with attempts by Mourinho to sign him doomed to fail?

Mourinho was, I believe, the man who lured the Frenchman to the Bernabeu from Lens after United had shown a very strong interest in the then teenager when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge but Phil Jones was signed from Blackburn instead.

Interest in Varane has remained ever since, on and off (at least with the speculation), but the central defender has confirmed he’ll be staying in Madrid after holding talks with his boss Zinedine Zidane, he told Spanish reporters.

‘I trust the club and I trust the coach. I talked with him a lot and he trusts me so it’s one of the reasons I stayed. I made the decision to stay, the right decision. I’ll continue to improve and I want this to be a good season for me and to be at my best.’

Fonte it is then?
