United are getting closer to sign long-term target Antonio Valencia from Wigan. Latics chairman Whelan revealed that United had made bids for the winger and he expects the club to make contact again.

‘They have been in touch with us and we will be starting negotiations very shortly, I would imagine,’ Whelan said.

‘United have been in touch with us over Antonio for the last two or three months, expressing an interest and actually putting cash offers on the table.

‘Those things have got to be picked up now. I think they were waiting to see if Ronaldo actually went to Real, which has happened. Things will develop over the next seven to 14 days.

‘Sir Alex had him watched practically every, single match last year. He has got a very strong interest in him. We are just sat on the fence now.’

Which means that it looks almost certain that Sir Alex wants Valencia and reports suggest that the player himself would be more than happy to join United. Right now it looks like the only questions are 1) what will be the fee and 2) when will he sign – even though Whelan also insists that they are not desperate to sell one of their best players, only would not stand in his way in the event of a good enough offer.
