Surely you have all heard the damning stat: Antonio Valencia scored seven goals in three seasons with Wigan – so how can we expect him to fulfil Cristiano Ronaldo’s boots? We never expected that from him but that’s another story.

The current story is that Valencia has notched four times already this season which, statistically, is a marked improvement on his record with Wigan. And it is not accidental, neither only down to the fact that United are a much better team than Wigan, thus creating more chances in games. The truth is that Valencia has been instructed to work on this aspect of his game.

‘We have been saying to him to shoot because he has power in his shooting,’ Sir Alex said. It brought results: he’s starting to turn into our Frank Lampard with two deflected goals to his name already. This sort of knack is something we’ve been missing for a while – and don’t forget that Valencia hit the bar at CSKA and at Liverpool as well so he could, theoretically, have six goals to his name already.

He’ll never be a Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of goalscoring but if he reaches double figures (which he is well on course to do) I think we can be more than happy with the 15.25 million we paid for him.
