Last season, having overcome a bad leg injury sustained in the Champions League Group tie against Glasgow Rangers, Antonio Valencia returned and showed he`d lost none of his skills.

This summer, Sir Alex Ferguson went out and bolstered his squad by signing Ashley Young. It meant that the Scot now had four world class operatives for the wide positions in Young, Nani, Park and the aforementioned Valencia.

Unfortunately, there are only so many wide players you can accommodate in a starting eleven and with Sir Alex preferring to start with Young and Nani, both in irrepressible form, Valencia and Park have become bit part players.

Valencia has, off course, slotted in at right-back as the side has been hit by injuries. But, Sir Alex Ferguson feels that the player has the natural ability to do a Ryan Giggs and move form a wide position into a central midfield position, remarking in a recent interview,

“We see him as an option in the centre of midfield. He`s disciplined and able to carry out any instruction we give him.”

Although we should perhaps also point out that there will still be very stiff opposition in that area of the park with regards to a regular first team place, but like Sir Alex says, it does remain a viable option.
