Though we were far from our best at Derby and lacked creativity, we still created and missed an unbelievable amount of chances and it is a concern for the boss.

It’s not the fact that we create those opportunities is what worries him of course. It’s that apart from Ronaldo – and he was also guilty of profligacy against Pompey and Derby – we do not have players who can put away their chances clinically.

“Last Saturday, of course, it knocked us out of the cup,” Fergie told MUTV.

“Today we made it hard for ourselves because we missed so many chances.

“We were really charitable – it was a lot of chances. Maybe it`s a little sticky spell, but we want to get over that. We`ve got big games, Bolton at home on Wednesday and then Liverpool on Sunday, so they`re important games coming up and we want to start taking chances.

“We are making them, and I suppose that`s the biggest bonus of all. If we keep making them, you know at some point someone`s going to suffer. We just have to keep going with that.”

I’d say that we need to address Rooney’s finishing: had he converted only a third of his chances he could push Ronaldo for the top goalscorer award. I think the answer will be reinstating the Tevez-Rooney partnership again and give it a prolonged run as it brought excellent results back in the autumn.

As for someone suffering when all those goals finally come out of the team – could it be Liverpool, please?
