United’s Search For A World Class Centre-Back Leads Them To Spain

|

Or does it?

Sometimes, when transfer windows are open, you stumble across a piece of speculation that either makes your jaw drop or smile in disbelief.

Today, I’ve stumbled across something that falls into the latter category.

Lurking in the pages of the news vehicle, the Express, is the insinuation that Manchester United have a desire to sign the Uruguayan defender Diego Godin.

Godin is currently on the books of the La Liga side, Atletico Madrid and our quoted source suggests that their manager, Diego Simeone, is doing his utmost to get the defender to sign a deal that will keep him in Spain.

Now, whilst I acknowledge that Manchester United need to add a world-class centre-back to the squad, something Jose Mourinho continually spoke about, are we really expected to believe that Manchester United are prepared to move heaven and earth to bring a 32-year-old to the club?

Or have I gauged this one completely wrong?

Diego Godin is, in my opinion, one of the best centre-backs in the world and has displayed his expertise at the highest level year upon year. So, he’s 32 but much of his skill is the way he reads the game. Sign him up and when he does become too old, employ him to coach the other United defenders on “how to defend” – they definitely need it!
