As far as goalkeeping gaffs go, the one committed by Edwin van der Sar yesterday must be up there with the best of them (or should that be worst?)

In fact I had to watch it several times, on Match of the Day, before I could even work out what Edwin had done.

In the fullness of time, I`ve no doubt it`ll be replayed on a variety of shows and it`ll no doubt appear on those nerdy DVD collections that emerge at Christmas with boring regularity.

After the game though, Sir Alex Ferguson wasn`t too harsh on his Dutch keeper, simply lamenting,

“Edwin has been playing for 25 years. Last time he made a mistake like that was probably in primary school so there`s nothing you can do about that. It`s just one of those inexplicable errors.”

The sad thing being it gave West Brom a share of the points and also handed them the impetus in a second half in which they could quite easily have gone on and taken all three points.

But, these things happen and in the cold light of the day watching it again just makes me wince before smiling!

Such is life!
