United produced a suberb second half to steamroller Wigan. It’s a lot easier task to rate the players after such a performance. Had I written this article after the first half it would have been very different but hey, who cares now?

Tomasz Kuczszak: One fine save but otherwise rarely troubled. 6

Gerard Piqué: Started at right-back and looked at ease with the role. O’Shea’s injury meant a swtich to the centre where he was equally confident. 7

Rio Ferdinand: Wigan attackers were no match for him, did his job comfortably. 7

Nemanja Vidic: Very unfortunate, early injury. 6

Patrice Evra: Good display though he was up against Wigan’s best performer Mario Melchiot. 7

Cristiano Ronaldo: Two goals, trickery, runs, creating for others: this is what we expect from the Portuguese and he delivered. 8

John O’Shea: Another early injury victim who did well until his withdrawal. 6

Paul Scholes: Ginger Ninja’s form’s been worrying during recent weeks but he looked to rediscover his vision and passing yesterday. 7

Ryan Giggs: Hit the post and played a part in the second goal. Melchiot contained him quite well to be honest. 6

Carlos Tevez: Now that’s what I’d like to see from Tevez. He was United’s best performer in that poor first half and the coolness and composure with which he took his goal was nothing short of superb. Linked well with Rooney and I still believe that all the nonsense about them being too similar is… well, nonsense. 8

Wayne Rooney: It could not be clearer that the goal against Roma did wonders for his confidence. Did well in the first half and improved in the second, provided an assist for Ronaldo and headed in the fourth goal. 8

Anderson: On for the injured Vidic, he was at ease alongside Scholes. Aggressive, quick, he fought for every ball which was pleasing to see. His long balls have been very good and his pass to Tevez before the first goal was excellent. 8

Danny Simpson: Came on after O’Shea’s injury. Encouraging display that suggests the Carling Cup nightmare was only a one-off. Energetic, made surging runs, crosses the ball well and even notched an assist when Rooney headed in one of his crosses. 7

Luis Nani: Came on for Tevez and though tried hard he did not make any notable contribution. 6
