Edwin van der Sar: Rash decision to come out for the ball at Derby’s goal but it wasn’t a crucial mistake. 6

Wes Brown: I thought he played very well. It’s a real shame that he does not want to sign a new contract, I will dedicate a longer piece to it tomorrow morning.

Nemanja Vidic: Tried desperately to prevent the goal but otherwise a stroll in the, erm, rain for the Serbian. 6

Rio Ferdinand: Comfortable against Miller. 6

Patrice Evra: Far from his best but some glimpses of his extraordinary ability. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo: Played a part in the first two goals and scored the fourth. The penalty was dubious to say the least but he despatched it effectively. 7

Michael Carrick: Active but wasn’t really tested by Derby’s ineffectual midfield. A solid contribution. 6

Anderson: I know it was only against Derby but brilliant, yet again. First to every ball, precise passing, great tackles – only that goal threat is absent still. 8

Ryan Giggs: Excellent. His corners were frustrating but his passing was exemplary and took his goal well. 8

Carlos Tevez: Frustrating first 35 minutes then found his feet in the rain and scored two goals and tormented the defenders afterwards. His second was quite lucky though. 8

Wayne Rooney: He really should have scored, he had two glorious chances in the first half and he was really unlucky. Better than against Fulham, I hope he’ll be in peak form at Anfield. 6

Darren Fletcher: Little impact, it was game over when he came in. 6

Louis Saha: Some nice touches, looks sharper and sharper with more games. 6

John O’Shea: No real impact after replacing Evra. 5
