Any hopes Jose Mourinho had of making another swoop on Benfica to improve Manchester United`s defence could be about to be thwarted.

After strengthening the heart of the Manchester United defence by signing Victor Lindelof, speculation had suggested that Nelson Semedo was also wanted by the boss.

However it is being suggested by the Mirror, that Barcelona are set to pip Manchester United in the race.

According to our referenced source, Barcelona have agreed a price with Benfica said to be in the region of £26 million, to sign the 23-year-old.

In order to seal the deal for the player who made 47 appearances for Benfica last season, scoring 2 goals and providing 12 assists, a delegation, from the Nou Camp, are on site in Lisbon to discuss the players contract and to tie up the deal.

Not the ending we would have hoped for but there are, as the saying goes, other fish in the sea.
