I`m not sure the world was prepared for what flowed from the lips of Sir Alex Ferguson yesterday!

Whilst speculation had been rife, and had been dominating the sports pages in recent days, about the possibility of Wayne Rooney leaving Old Trafford, the six minutes and thirty-four seconds Sir Alex dedicated to the affair took our breath away.

At times it felt as if Sir Alex was mourning the loss of a son such was the tone of his voice and even though the potential of a last minute olive branch gesture exists, it`d take a monumental turnaround for Rooney to stay at Old Trafford.

Amongst the many things that came to light was the startling fact that as far as a contract renewal goes, the negotiations are firmly in there infancy with Sir Alex proclaiming,

“There`s no offer on the table because they won`t listen to one.”

“We`re dealing with agents who live in the pockets of players.”

But the over-riding aspect of the address, for me, was that Sir Alex seemed genuinely disappointed, almost heartbroken, that Rooney had chosen to explore a potential Old Trafford exit, with Sir Alex re-iterating,

“Yes, I`m disappointed, very disappointed, I can`t believe it.”

“We`re prepared to offer him better terms than any Premier League player.”

I`d doubt, reading between the lines, whether any financial offer would change things around now, to us it appears that Rooney has his sights set on pastures new, but where remains to be confirmed!
