Playing ‘Devil`s Advocate` is there a case for agreeing with Wayne Rooney about his assessment with regards to United not showing sufficient participation in the transfer market and not grabbing the best talent there is out there?

If we look at the money the club has spent since banking the £80 million we received for Cristiano Ronaldo, back in July 2009, we find that our major signings amount to £48.4 million.

Broken down, these major signings are:-

? Luis Valencia £16m
? Michael Owem – free
? Gabriel Obertan – £3m
? Chris Smalling – £10m
? Mame Diouf – £4m
? Javier Hernandez – £8m
? Bebe – £7.4m

Which some would say gives credence to Rooney`s inference. However, there are two sides to every story and perhaps the feeling was there that United were strong enough to still prosper on the trophy front.

After all, we only lost out on a record fourth title on the trot by the narrowest of margins and our Champions League quest was only derailed courtesy of a wonder-strike from Arjen Robben.

But those figures do provide plenty of food for thought don`t they!
