It became blatantly obvious, towards the end of the season, Manchester United seriously struggled whenever Michael Carrick wasn`t in the side.

With the certain something that Carrick brings to the midfield lacking, United`s results dipped and instead of homing in on a top three place United had to be content with fourth place in the Premier League and a tricky qualifying tie to make the Champions League group stages next season.

Well it appears that steps are being taken to prevent that situation from developing again with it being reported this morning that Manchester United have declared an interest in the Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneirderlin

The French international, said to be worth £25 million, was thought to be set for a move to our Premier League rivals, Arsenal, but United`s late interest could, so we`re told, see the transfer hijacked.

Southampton`s manager Ronald Koeman, aware that his club risks losing players this summer, just like last summer, has remarked about the 25-year-old midfielder,

“There is interest in a number of our players, including Schneiderlin.”

Whereas the player himself seems resigned to leaving, commenting about his situation,

“I think my decision is made.

“The Champions League is my goal and if I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.”

Well that narrows the field down a little then!
