Just how close did Paul Scholes come to agreeing to come out of international retirement?

The reason I ask is that when Fabio Capello was quizzed about his provisional list of 30 players for his squad the England boss spoke about the possible inclusion of Scholes.

It transpires that Scholes was on the verge of agreeing to a comeback but when broached on the subject on the morning of the announcement admitted that he`d had a change of heart.

The tabloid press go on to mention that Capello wanted Scholes to play the role of the holding midfielder, a role we`re sure that Paul could do more than adequately.

But it seems the quiet lad from Oldham simply preferred to spend the summer with his family, with Capello remarking,

“We tried to convince him to come back for England, but he said no.”

“He preferred to stay with his family. He`s one of the best midfielders.”

Paul`s prerogative we`d suggest!
