Sat in the crowd watching the action unfold, there`s no doubting that Wayne Rooney would have preferred to be on the pitch giving his all for United.

But circumstances have contrived whereby our star striker, from last season, is side-lined.

There`s also the small matter of whether he`d be selected considering his current form compared to that of Javier Hernandez.

After the match, Sir Alex Ferguson picked up on the lack of form Rooney has shown this season remarking,

“I don`t know the reason for his loss of form because it started in the World Cup.

“Whether some clubs have been filling his head in that period to affect him we don`t know.”

“The important thing is for us to put it behind us. But certainly something is troubling him.”

Now should we point out exactly what or should we keep quiet?

Continuing Sir Alex tries to offer a plausible reason, offering that of his recent contract negotiations, something that, incidentally, started back in August, something that coincides with the aforementioned lack of form, commenting,

“I think that this has been preying on his mind.”

Wondering exactly how to spend a fortune so huge it`d prove impossible perhaps? But, although his image was indelibly tarnished during the latter stages of those negotiations when Rooney suggested he was off, there was no excusing the behaviour of some towards the lad, a point that Sir Alex also feels may have contributed to his state of mind, especially the so-called death threats with Sir Alex, explaining,

“Nobody enjoys that sort of attention. When he saw the impact his decision made it took him aback and he had a rethink.”

But strangely enough, since those testing Rooney times, the side, just as Tony Pulis predicted, has gone from strength to strength winning their last three games, causing Sir Alex to comment,

“This could have exactly the galvanizing effect we need, that pulls everyone together.”

It may have pulled the team together and there may well have been a show of unity at Kai`s birthday party but here`s one hack whose of the opinion that it`ll still be a long way back as far as the supporters affections are concerned!
