He may not be able to play in the 2010 South Africa World Cup but Fabio Capello is hoping that Rio Ferdinand could still have an impact.

The knee injury may have dashed his hopes of playing a leading role but his mere presence, in the camp, is seen by many as being good for moral with an England source remarking,

“Capello has spoken with Rio and will be delighted to have him around for as long as he wants to stay.”

“Rio is obviously very down at the moment but to have him around during the tournament would be great for team morale.”

And as for Rio`s mind state, quotes also appear in the media this morning with Rio, obviously, not in the best frame of mind with a close advisor attributed as having remarked,

“Rio is absolutely distraught. I know how hard he has worked for this.”

“He had fully recovered from the back injury that had troubled him for much of the season and he was feeling extremely fit and very sharp.”

“I know how proud he would have been to lead out England in their World Cup Group C opener against the United States next Saturday. It would have been the proudest moment of his distinguished career.”

“So to suffer this freak injury in training is just a nightmare for him.”

We guess only time will help Rio in this darkest of hours but we`re sure that he`s aware that everyone is also feeling for him and if he can still play an off-the-pitch role then he should stay in South Africa.
