Martinez’s team-mates at Manchester United would have had contrasting emotions because Raphael Varane was part of the France team that lost in what was arguably the best ever World Cup final to have been played since the tournament started in 1930.
A host of Martinez and Varane’s Man United team-mates took to social media to offer their sympathy for Varane, as well as congratulating Martinez on his World Cup triumph.
Huge commiserations, @RaphaelVarane 🙏

Christian Eriksen liked an Instagram post that United posted, which said, “We’re proud of you ❤️” and several of Varane’s United team-mates liked a commiserations Instagram post that United posted shortly after the World Cup final defeat.
Bruno Fernandes posted a contrasting of feelings towards his United team-mates as whilst he congratulated Martinez, he had this message for Varane – “Amazing tournament from you once again”.

Alejandro Garnacho, who has played for the Argentina Under 20s side would have no doubt have been pleased with yesterday’s outcome and he took to social media to express his happiness for his United team-mate, Martinez as he wrote in Spanish, “Congratulations brother you deserve it more than anyone, I love you” [via Man Utd].

Despite not featuring in the final, Martinez certainly played his part in helping Argentina win the World Cup as he was pivotal to helping Lionel Scaloni’s side getting over the line in their Round of 16 clash with Australia because his last-ditch block late in the game ensured that Argentina held on for a 2-1 win.
