Like a good wine maturing with age, it was great to see Paul Scholes pulling the strings in midfield and doing more than most to ensure that victory was ours.

Scholes, who had the opportunity to rest for the whole summer after politely declining the chance to join Fabio Capello`s England squad in South Africa, reflected on the match in a post match interview given shortly after the final whistle, commenting,

“It was a good game and we`re happy with the win.”

“It`s more of a pre-season friendly but it`s a trophy.”

“It`s always good to beat Chelsea. They are a quality side who beat us three times last year.”

And on mounting another assault on the Premier League crown,

“We`ve got off to the right start this year. We weren`t that far off last year – just one point in the league.”

“With more determination this year hopefully we can go one step further.”

We certainly all hope so. But what does the boss, Sir Alex think about the ongoing career of a player many thought might have hung his boots up prior to this season,

“This time last year, he`s saying to himself, ‘This is my last season` – and a lot of people thought that.”

“It came across my mind also, simply because he`s had a lot if injuries in his career.”

“But he keeps coming back – it`s not easy to do that. It`s phenomenal. He`s just an incredible footballer.”

And we`re all certain that Sir Alex knows just how to nurture Scholes through this season to ensure the golden oldie makes maximum impact.
