Testimonial fixtures have changed over the years!

Gone are the days when they were staged to put a few quid in a players pocket in response to ten years loyal service.

Nowadays, with the game at the level we participate in awash with money, the trend is to use any cash raised to support several prescribed charities, a move that should be applauded.

On May 24th, Manchester United entertain Juventus in a testimonial match for Gary Neville, a loyal servant who we`ll probably not see another like.

Now with the Champions League Final being staged four days later and with Sir Alex Ferguson contemplating how to beat Barcelona at Wembley, we`d imagine there`s little chance of many, or any, of the first team squad being risked.

It`s probably a fact that Gary Neville acknowledges and probably the reason why he`s trying to assemble the famous Class of 1992 to take on the legendary side from Turin.

Sadly, it looks like one of those from that era, a certain David Beckham, might not be available with his club, LA Galaxy, set to play Houston the next day.

Discussing the situation, a spokesman from across the pond is remarked as having stated,

“There`s no way he`ll be allowed back to Europe”

Hopefully, there`ll be a change of mind because the Class of 1992 just won`t be the same without its most famous pupil and that would be a crying shame on a night when we`re set to pay homage to one of our great servants!
