With Sir Alex Ferguson otherwise engaged (chasing Robin van Persie), it was left to Mike Phelan to orchestrate matters over in Hannover.

At one stage Sir Alex`s assistant must have been dreading letting his boss know how things were going when our hosts, Hannover 96, stormed into a 3-1 lead.

Thankfully, Wayne Rooney rode to the rescue inspiring United to mount a comeback that saw United emerge 4-3 victors.

Our hosts took the lead, although it has ot be said, against the run of play, when Artur Sobiech pounce don a mistake from Anders Lindegaard to score from close range.

Javier Hernandez equalised for United around the thirty minute mark but our hosts were ahead again shortly after half time when Karim Haggui out-jumped Carrick and Vidic to head past De Gea.

The lead was further extended when a wonderful flick from Mohammed Abdellaoue looked to have given the German side the win but then Rooney inspired that comeback.

With sixty-eight minutes gone, Rooney curled in a decent free kick and then levelled matters with an expertly taken penalty after having been brought down by the keeper.

Five minutes from the end, victory was ours when Shinji Kagawa finished off a move that saw a fine assist from the inspired Rooney.

A decent result although we suspect Sir Alex might have a few words to say about going 3-1 behind!
