The days when football was just a sport have long gone.

Now whether that is to the detriment of the game I`ll let you decide.

These days football clubs seek an identity around the globe and the game we love is awash with money and clubs are deemed as brands.

Now you can either join in the hullabaloo or simply fall by the wayside, but if you are going to join in then I suppose you have to aim to be the best.

Therefore, although we`ve not won a trophy for two years it is great to see that the brand name that is Manchester United has been deemed, in an annual survey carried out by Brand Finance to be the most valuable brand name in the football world.

In fact United, in over-taking the leaders in the market last season – Bayern Munich, have become the first club in history to break the $1 billion mark.

Buoyed by a 63% jump from last year or value has soared to a whopping $1.206 billion.

I still prefer the good old days though, how about you?
