I`m not sure who decided that for the Community Shield that you`d be allowed to make six substitutions during the game, it certainly slowed the game down during the latter stages and stopped either side getting into any rhythm.

The ruling also saw the sight of Juan Mata being hauled off only twenty-seven minutes after being introduced.

The decision by Mourinho to take off Mata didn`t go down too well with the Spaniard, who joined us for a then club record fee of £37.1 million back in 2014.

This morning the tabloid media have wasted little time in bringing back to the surface the inference that Mata, who was sold to Manchester United by Mourinho, when both were at Chelsea; could be heading for the Old Trafford exit door.

But, discussing the situation in his post-match press conference Jose Mourinho clarified matters, remarking to those in attendance,

“I couldn`t take off Fellaini or Ibra.

“The rules allow six subs, I`d made five and I wanted to stop the game.

“I need to take off the smallest player because we were expecting a lot of long balls.”

It seems logical to me but then again I wouldn`t be too surprised if, before this summer transfer window slams shut, Juan Mata is heading for pastures new, call it gut instinct.
