United learn FA Youth Cup opponents

Manchester United’s title defence of the FA Youth Cup will begin with an away fixture to Crystal Palace.

The draw for the third round of the FA Youth Cup was made, which is the stage of where Premier League and Championship clubs enter, just like in the men’s FA Cup competition.

The game against the South London side must be completed by Saturday 17 December, which is the weekend of the FIFA 2022 World Cup final, and all the third-round games must be completed on that date, so if the tie cannot be settled after 90 minutes, then there will be extra-time and penalties if necessary.

The trip to Palace will be United’s first since that glorious night in Manchester back in May as the youth team beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 to win a record 11th FA Youth Cup, and United will be hoping to achieve the same feat in 2023 as they did in 2022.

In front of a record crowd for an FA Youth Cup final, United defeated Forest at Old Trafford thanks to goals from captain Rhys Bennett and Alejandro Garnacho, who scored twice that night.

Garnacho, has since broke through into the first team as he scored his first Premier League goal against Fulham on Sunday and the Class of 2023 will be hoping that they can follow in the Argentine’s footsteps and break into the Manchester United first team.

The game against Palace brings back happy memories for United, because this year was the 30th anniversary of which the famous Class of 92 won the competition.

United won both legs against Palace in the 1991/92 season as they defeated Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park and then 3-2 at Old Trafford.
